In tune with the role of the work itself, and not initially with the role of art Yoël Benharrouche is a dedicated artist who does not claim to draw his inspiration from any school or contemporary artistic trend.
He was born in 1961 at Beer-Sheva and grew up in Aschdod within a family deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition. He came to 1974 in Nice and stayed there for some twenty years.
His years spent in France were years devoted to training and the development of his art. He discovered the nude, perspective, history of Art and learned about different techniques. The paintings executed in this initial period already demonstrated an astonishingly fertile creativity: scenes from the genre " living nature", or more intimist compositions again evoked the artist's feelings in a very realist style, and there was already evidence of an unyielding emphasis on spirituality.
In 1993, he returned to Israël and settled in a desert border village in Judaea. He rediscovered the exceptional beauty of his native land and gave free rein to his passionate love of Sion. Surrounded by his wife and his four children, he painted, drew, illuminated, and sculpted; drawing on the essential elements of his inspiration in the study of sacred texts and on a mystical representation of Man and the world. The canvases, watercolours, drawings and polychromies of this second period are the reflection of an inner life, which constantly strove for the Absolute. They are more abstract, purer, and have an intense luminosity.
Hailed by critics and honoured since 1987 with prestigious distinctions, Yoël Benharrouche Has exhibited to France, to Suisse, to Allemagne, to Angleterre also to Israël and to Etats-Unis.
